Jim
called the meeting to order for the Bill Moore Family by reading a story about
Old Geezers. The article had been emailed to Judy from
Chuck. Jim told all present that
Chuck thought it applied to most all the guys in the family. It goes like this:
“At
sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Geezers hold
their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them.
Old Geezers remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl
Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler.
They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet
Age and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam.
If
you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street,
he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are
courtly to women. Old Geezers
hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain that
the lady is on the inside for protection.
Old
Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and
they don’t like any filth on TV or in the movies. Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it’s about their grandchildren.
It’s
the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians
or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country.
This
country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Geezers!”
Jim asked Judy to read the minutes from the 2001 reunion, which included the story that resulted from the breadbox papers. It was long but pretty much covers the Moore clan growing up from 1916 through the early 1940’s.
Also
read was a letter written by Grandma Moore to Grandma White (Charlotte
& Cynthia’s mother). These two ladies traveled together to
Florida by train to attend John and Charlotte’s wedding. That trip and the time together allowed
their friendship to blossom. The letter said:
“Dear
Friend,
Received
your letter yesterday so will send the peach butter receipt with John. You’ll get it sooner that way. I don’t have a regular peach butter receipt,
but the apple butter for a (small) amount is as follows:
3 gallons fruit – after run through a colander
8 lb. Granulated sugar
1 No.2 can Karo
1 qt. Vinegar
I
use about a fourth apples with the peaches more or less and if the vinegar
is very sour, use less. We saved
the bruised and over ripe peaches for the nicest we made. If you use the whole peaches, just wash and cook in as small
amount of water as possible.
Roger
was here this morning. Doesn’t
get the Hollinger farm here near us.
Said Cynthia had a very bad cold but was better. Don has been in bed all week with a throat infection. Is going back to the doctor this afternoon.
Has such a headache all the time.
Harry’s
have a baby boy born yesterday morning.
Kent was here and was all excited when he heard the news.
I
was glad to get your letter. Wish
I was near enough to help you make your peach butter.
As
ever,
Sadie
E. Moore”
That
letter seemed to fit very well into the breadbox story!
Judy
told Margie a couple of years ago how much she appreciated the fact that Grandma
Moore always made her granddaughters a quilt when they reached a certain age.
However, Grandma died the year that Judy turned 5 so she didn’t get
her quilt. When Margie arrived at Judy and Dan’s
the night before the reunion, she was holding a quilt top. The pattern is called Midnight Skies.
It is done in beautiful flannels. Margie said, “Here is your quilt from Grandma Moore
and…. me!” What a beautiful gift! Margie offered to take it back to New
Mexico to finish but Judy will not let it go.
Barbara Moore shared a beautiful quilt she has been working on with Amish friends. When complete it will be Becky’s.
Notes
were read from cousins who couldn’t attend. They
came from Ben & Jeanne Tomb, Dave Moore (all of Don’s family were in Colorado
for the Fraley reunion), Max’s #2 son-in-law, Tom Bates, Dan Moore, Kay Moore,
Chuck Moore, Nelson Moore and Kent Moore.
Joyce
gave the treasurers report. Last
year we were $50 in the hole. After
the reunion, we had $359. $50 was given
to the church. $50 donation was
made to Cedar Grove in memory of Treva Timmons. There is an outstanding flower bill for an arrangement sent
to the Frank Timmons family a short while ago.
Joyce
said that she and Jack attended the sale at Aunt Helen and & Uncle Fos’
place in May. In a box Joyce
got, she found a recipe for carrot cake that Aunt Mary Ellen had given Aunt
Helen in 1983. Joyce made a few copies for those in attendance
but just in case you couldn’t make it, since we are going to send these minutes
out to the family group, I will include the recipe here:

The
recipe is signed: 1983 – Mary
E. Williams
Jill Moore had several of the Moore Family Cook Books available.
Joy
and Jim Moore were celebrating their 28th anniversary.
Eleanor
Williams is stable and about the same as she has been. It has been 2 ½ years since her first
stroke. She was very angry with
Uncle Bob for not bringing her to the reunion. She was worried that we will forget her! Uncle Bob said that she just cannot be gone for more than 2-3
hours without wearing out.
Max
and Joyce are expecting their 3rd great-grandchild. Stacey
is expecting in February 2003.
Aunt Helen and Uncle Fos have been married 62 years and have 7 great grandchildren. Aunt Helen wanted everyone to know that those seven were about the best looking kids ever!!
Tom
announced that Daniel and Sarah will be married on August 10th
at Cedar Grove.
Steve
and Mary Lou’s daughter Andrea graduated from Tri-Village High School this
year and will be attending Wright State in Dayton.
Bill
and Jill’s son Brandon graduated from Tri-Village High School and will be
attending IU East in the fall.
Sharon and Mike Cobb’s son, Adam, graduated from Eaton High School and will be attending Indiana Wesleyan in the fall.
We
were really happy to have Uncle Ken with us!
He is a bit thinner but his color is good and he has a sparkle in his
eye! He said he is so very proud
to have been a Moore for 44 years. He really likes
Virginia and being near the kids. His
medical care is great there. However,
he sure does miss everyone here. Said he is going to fatten up a bit now that the worst of his
medical treatments are behind him and, he is going to be sure to be back to
Ohio more often. Kenny Ross sends
his love to all the clan.
Bill and Jill’s older daughter Brittaini turned 21 years old the day before the reunion. Aunt Miriam remembers calling the reunion 21 years ago to announce they had their first granddaughter.
Without
a doubt, Margie won the prize for distance traveled! Sure was glad to have her here. She shared that John and Judy’s daughter Jolene graduated
from med school in Mexico and will be training at Johns Hopkins in New York
to become a brain surgeon. She
has had her last name changed to Judy’s maiden name. She would rather be Dr. Bryson than Dr. Tomb!!
Jim got some great pictures. It was a pretty day. The food was great! The company was extraordinary!!
I decided to skip much of the detail contained in the minutes in order to shorten the length of the meeting and enable more time for us to visit. I will e-mail the unabridged version.
